READING about a cop praised for his advice to a woman kicked in the stomach (Evening Times May 18), any woman, or man for that matter, who is not aware that walking alone late at night has a potential risk attached to it and acts accordingly is laying themselves open to such incidents or much worse.

The police quote "Don't let someone incapable of controlling themselves in public alter how you live your life" - Well therein lies the problem.

That same person could have stabbed her to death or imposed some permanently crippling damage to her person.

Would that alter the way she lives her life enough for both of them to get the message?

I THINK it was stupid and naive advice to give anybody, never mind a woman.

Just have a look at the crime reports in the media, the majority of serious assaults occur late at night and early hours.

There are all kinds of drink and drug fuelled idiots roaming around just looking for trouble.

I mean would anyone encourage their daughter or son to do so, or anyone for that matter when they don't have to, come on let's be realistic and honest, it's like walking into a lions den.

I would imagine the cop agreed with her when she showed her indignancy at being asked the question.

Having been brought up in Glasgow all my life and consider myself more streetwise than average I would advise anybody not to walk the streets of any city unnecessarily in these hours and I stress unnecessarily.

IN response to The Shed bidding to extend its licence (Evening Times May 18), as a Shawlands resident I can assure you that neither myself or any of my neighbours support this.

I can also tell you that neither myself or any of my neighbours were asked.

Where the Shed's owners have got these figures from is beyond my understanding, not from me or my neighbours.

Shawlands is a residential area. It is not the city centre.

I can only hope the council see beyond the desire of the Shed's owner to make a few extra quid at the expense of the local residents' quality of life.

I wouldn't describe this part of Shawlands as "residential".

Across the road is Langside Halls and the area in front is being made into a civic square. Shawlands Cross has lots of commercial premises as does Kilmarnock Road and Minard Road leading from it.
