I CAN'T believe I am writing this, but I feel Caroline Wilson's report of May 26 is a little unkind to NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde.

The March figure of beds lost is not a 12-month high (April 2015 was higher), even if it was more than 1000 up on February, not 100.

NHSGGC's tally in March was less than six per 1000 population, against a national rate of 8.6, and several other Boards were over 10.

And their March total was 19% lower than the March 2015 figure, so progress is being made.

It is always tempting to draw hasty conclusions from statistics, when in fact they reflect the huge variation in the profiles of different areas.

I agree that NHSGGC has too few beds overall, so they can ill afford to lose any to people who don't need them, but they face huge challenges and things could be a lot worse.

I READ with interest your story about people in Maryhill campaigning for a new primary school.

Overcrowding in Glasgow schools seems to be a problem we are reading about more and more.

It is an issue that stretched from the south side of the city to the west end with parents tearing their hair out trying to find places for their children.

The new Gaelic school on the south side is oversubscribed, Hillhead Primary is a mess and Crookston Castle Primary is too full - and these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

A long term plan is needed - but what is the council doing to sort this out in the short term?

I WAS saddened to learn of the death of Dr Iain Kerr, who had admitted to helping his patients die.

I fully agree with his statement that "the law of the land is out of step with what might be called natural justice" on the matter of assisted dying.

He was a great champion and a compassionate man who will be greatly missed.

I couldn't have felt more sorry for the bus driver who went up the wrong street on his first day in the job and got stuck.

Can you imagine a worse first day at work? And then seeing yourself in the newspaper?

I hope he doesn't get in to too much trouble. Parts of the city are rabbit warrens and it's fairly easily done.
