SEPTEMBER has not yet ended and as well as having the shops full of Christmas material we now have fireworks being let off on a nightly basis.

I always thought the sale of these were restricted until nearer November 5.

It still amazes me how Scotland, wishing to be independent, still celebrates Guy Fawkes, which is essentially an English anniversary.

THE National Service Life Stories project is conducting oral history interviews with men from Glasgow who did National Service between 1949 and 1960.

More than two million young men were called up for National Service.

Some saw active service in Korea or Malaya, or were posted to Europe, but many faced two years of boredom in Britain while subject to strict military discipline.

A whole generation were effected by these experiences, but historians know little about how this shaped men’s lives afterwards.

This project, conducted by historians at the University of Essex and funded by the Leverhulme Trust, will explore how National Service affected men’s working and family lives, their political values, attitudes to authority, community and discipline, and importantly, how people remember National Service.

Ex-National Servicemen who might like to be interviewed can find out more by writing to Professor Gurney, Department of History, University of Essex, Wivenhoe Park, Colchester, CO4 3SQ or emailing nationalservice@essex.ac.uk.

I THINK the Scottish Football Association’s decision to hold the Rangers vs Celtic match on Hogmanay is crazy to say the least!

On this most important day, it will only make an excuse for all the more drinking, congestion, and violence, and strain on the emergency services in the city.

I HAD an appointment at the new hospital and this is to thank all the inconsiderate, selfish, and even ignorant car drivers who parked in disabled car spaces.

It took us some time to get a space, but there were lots taken up by cars without a blue badge - why ?

Two wrongs do not make a right.

I do not have money to pay for parking for hospital treatment others may have.

I struggled to the appointment because we were so far away. I would employ tow trucks to tow these selfish, ignorant, better than everybody else’s cars away.

No badge no space.
