What democracy?

WHEN I heard Theresa May’s speech on October 5 I was disgusted and dismayed at her attitude towards the Scottish people.

She said Britain will be a country and society that works for everyone. Fairness for all, and that we were living in a democracy.

Sixty two per cent of Scottish people voted to stay in the EU so where is the democracy when Scotland’s voice is not heard?

I am a volunteer host for some wonderful foreign students (mainly outside the EU) helping them with English conversation.

Their countries or parents pay high fees to our universities.

However, Mrs May wants to cut the number of foreign students coming here! How would we be able to fund free places for our own students?

I believe it would also seriously affect all EU students and now, with the poor exchange rate, imports will be much more expensive.

As far as I can see it is only a society that works for England.

No compassion

IN her big speech, Theresa May seemed to be impersonating Julie Andrews.

I expected the Prime Minister to burst into a verse of Climb Every Mountain!

Is the hard-nosed Ms May pulling the wool over our eyes pretending she cares for poor people.

The Tory party has shown all the compassion of a ferret in a rabbit hutch.

Still Game ‘tripe’

RE the Evening Times report that said Still Game had attracted 1.3 million viewers (October 12).

How people can laugh at the show has me completely baffled.

The last time I saw a load of tripe like this was in my local butcher’s shop.

Great Scottish comedians like Lex McLean, Chic Murray, Hector Nicol and Jimmy Logan must be turning in their graves.

Fight bus cuts

I HAVE been following the cuts to local bus services in the Evening Times in recent days.

While I don’t often agree with the council, I was heartened to see Labour’s Glasgow Transport spokesman Alistair Watson backing local communities in the de-regulated bus sector.

Local communities cannot sustain these route withdrawals.

I wish my local councillors would stand up to these bus cuts as well.

The SNP have got this wrong and need to act.
