I read your story of the Glasgow soldier, Private Matthew Nealy, killed in Cyprus by terrorists.

It may be of some comfort to his sister, Mrs Margaret Moncur, that there are still some of us who remember this war.

Another young soldier who was killed there by terrorists while playing football was Private John Beattie, also aged 19.

He lived in Oakbank Street, off Garscube Road.

I lived round the corner from him.

It is nice to know that after all of these years, some recognition is being given to these young lads.

Unfortunately their parents will have passed away, never to know of this recognition.

With regards binmen not being allowed to accept presents: just as long as the council do not attend any free lunches or nights out during the year.

Rules for all, or not at all.

I live in East Dunbartonshire and have always found the refuse collectors to be friendly and helpful in all weathers, despite the job they do and I always ensure that I give them something for Christmas.

Now, however, thanks to the bureaucracy that surrounds rubbish collection there are not one but three different teams who do uplifts.

Bribery and corruption in low places? I don't think so.

.I remember Mr Clarke from Maryhill who used to lift the bins: one of the cheeriest and helpful of men.

Hope he is enjoying his retirement, as he is well out of it now with this rubbish being spouted about bribes.

In response to the Chief Inspector speaking after the two officers were purposefully hit by a car in Knightswood, we all support and wish the police force well and understand that you are having to work under the worst kind of Scottish government restraints.

We see it on a daily bases with the lack of visibility and the closures of police stations.

Helensburgh actually closes its station at 5 pm, so all crimes are committed at night.

I was one of the lucky ones to get Christmas Lights tickets. I am happy for him but feel rotton for other kids.
