I WAS interested to read that Glasgow will get £115m as part of the Region City Deal to invest in the public realm areas of the city (Evening Times May 9).

I hope they can find the cash to get the ugly thick, black overhead Christmas decoration wires that hang limply between the high poles on the outside of George Square removed outwith the two month long festive season.

They are a needless eyesore for 10 months of the year and they blacken the sky above George Square during sunny summer days.

They make George Square look like an old sailing ship when it should be looking its best.

I cannot honestly think of any other civic square in the UK that leaves a major part of its Christmas decorations set up in place all year round.

Councillors and highly paid officials must see this every day they travel to the Chambers.

That’s not good enough.

Pure stupidity

IN reference to the story about the Celtic fan being sent on the Subway full of Rangers fans (Evening Times May 1), it was an absolute disgrace.

The steward who told him the Subway was clear should be sacked or something as he would have known what was going on.

It was just lucky that there were some fans who made him welcome or you don’t know what would have happened to that guy as he has crutches.

Pure stupidity.

READING about the plans to extend free bus fare to 16-18-year-olds (Evening Times May 11), when I was 16 if I didn’t have the bus fare ( most of the time ) I walked everywhere.

It was a wee trick I learned from my dad, it was no bother and kept me fit although I only know that now.

The concessionary travel scheme is at risk as it costs too much money.

Let these teenagers walk.

Must 'do better'

READING about the husband caring for his wife with dementia (Evening Times May 11), it is a good story on many different levels.

The benefits system (UK wide albeit with some forthcoming "devolution" and the care system (better in Scotland than rest of UK?) are inadequate for this type of scenario.

As a society we will have to "do better";

In the meantime it will be down to the resilience of individuals and families affected. Best wishes to them.
