MAY I, through your letters page, send very grateful thanks to Alan, a wonderfully kind Glasgow black cab driver.

On leaving the Queen Elizabeth University hospital after visiting an elderly relative, I’d taken the Clyde pedestrian walkway to aher house where I could stay for a few days while her condition stabilised.

I emerged to an unfamiliar landscape on Dumbarton Road and didn’t know whether to turn left or right and it’s a very long road!

A black cab drew up and peeped his horn, waiting for a passenger so I asked directions. He told me I was a long way from where I wanted to be and that he was picking his daughter up. He said to wait a wee minute and he’d take me.

I tried to refuse and said just point me in the right direction but he wouldn’t hear of it.

He could go in my direction, I should just jump in. He said I was on the wrong side of the expressway and it was no trouble, not to worry.

I was all hot and bothered, it was a muggy day and trudging through the tunnel worrying about the future for my aunt so I finally, and very gratefully, accepted.

His daughter - Jayden or Jaden - was unfazed by an extra gate-crasher on her journey, maybe used to her dad doing his good deed for the day.

He took me right to the door - for free! What a true gent!

How reassuring to know that we can still rely on the kindness of strangers - if they’re Glasgow taxi drivers at least!

Theresa May-be

THERESA May has done so many disguised U-turns she should change her name to Theresa Maybe.

Even the election date was brought forward after many denials.

Watch out for her changing her stance from fox hunter to animal lover.

Exceptional NHS

MY wife was recently diagnosed with a potentially life threatening condition.

Fortunately we had an efficient team of professionals from our much maligned NHS.

The early action initiated by GPs at Rutherglen primary care centre, the surgical skills by specialists at Stobhill and Princess Royal hospitals and the attention and care of their nursing staff and the staff of ward 8c at QUEH all combined to rescue us from a dire situation.

As a society we tend to obsess about the failings of the NHS but fail to recognise and appreciate the exceptional outcomes achieved each and every day.

As a family, we are indebted to these professionals and I reckon we are not alone.

Thank you and God Bless you all for the marvellous work, dedication and great kindness you gave to my wife and myself.
