SURELY the time has come for our shops and public businesses to ask customers to allow emergency service personnel to be served first to enable them to attend any blue light 999 calls.

Yes, it is as much about Joe Public respecting them enough to realise they should, without it needing to be legislated.

While common sense is a wonderful thing, sadly many people are far to pre-occupied with our own lives to think about those who put their lives on the line in the call of duty.

Council problem

IN reference to the letter talking about Nicola Sturgeon and Govanhill (Evening Times July 4), for the nth time: Govanhill’s issues are council issues.

It’s not Nicola Sturgeon’s fault that a) high street shopping has deteriorated over 40 years and b) the council hasn’t dealt with dodgy landlords, bins issues and infestations.

City to blame

YES Govanhill has descended into filth and chaos as the Labour party in Glasgow took the loot from the Home Office to put some people into the high rise flats in Sighthill.

The problem then spread from the north of Glasgow directly to Govanhill, especially after Sighthill was wiped away.

This was all done for Government cash although, after all the flats had been redecorated and refurnished, followed by the furnishings being quickly sold off by the grateful residents, it slowly dawned on Labour in Glasgow that there was actually no gold at the end of the asylum seeker’s rainbow after all.

At that point, they reneged all responsibility, allowed the various slum landlords in and around Govanhill to take advantage of people.

A council problem, certainly. Sturgeon’s problem, yes as it forms part of her constituency but, as an MSP, not so useful as the majority of the situations are in Glasgow City Council’s domain.

Forgotten pledge

THERE is statutory dereliction of duty from Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council in the Govanhill Ghetto.

Sturgeon agreed with Let’s Save Govanhill campaigners that local government is a wholly devolved issue and therefore her responsibility.

She also accepted that the buck should stop with her and promised campaigners two years ago to bring the decision makers from within her cabinet and Glasgow City Council to the table to action the demands of the Let’s Save Govanhill campaign.

She did not follow through on her promise.
