REGARDING your story, Memorial to VC hero lives on, (Evening Times, September 8) James Stokes was a true hero and a boy from the Gorbals.

He was killed in action on March 1, 1945 in Kervenheim, Rhineland, Germany. He was awarded the VC posthumously and his wife and young son went down to Buckingham Palace in London to receive it from King George VI.

I think Glasgow should name a building or street in the New Gorbals after him to remind the younger generation of this wonderful hero who gave his life for his country and was born and bred in the Gorbals.

Foreign fear

I AM of Scots and English descent and care about both places.

I am broken-hearted that the people living in Scotland may tear up their relationship with the rest of the UK. For me, the prospect of going home to a foreign country is appalling.

Please, we are stronger together, stay together.

Change needed

DO I sense panic setting in at Westminster. First it was the big stick and now the carrot.

Westminster vetoed a devo-max option insisting on yes or no. Now they promise further powers.

But powers are useless, assuming we get them, without the monetary ability to direct Scottish resources where they are needed, and who controls the purse strings at present? Westminster.

Something needs to change and soon.

Vain hope?

IF Scotland does vote Yes will the politicians on both siders of the Border - who were elected by we the public - stop their incessant childish squabbling and accept that the people have spoken?

Are they not then duty bound to carry out the wishes of the voters as delivered through the democratic referendum process?

Or am I just a bit old-fashioned and naive?
