Anyone who lived through the 1980s can see the similarity to the tactics that were used the to close the mines, the car industry, and the steelworks; provoke a strike then blame the unions for the closure.
Such decisions are taken a long time in advance.
I don't know if it has anything to do with the referendum, but that wouldn't surprise.

GLASGOW always extends a warm welcome to foreign football fans.
The vast majority are here to enjoy themselves and reach out a hand of friendship. However, if we never see Ajax fans in the city again it will be a blessing.
Many of the fans behaved like animals, both inside and outside Celtic Park and are a disgrace to their club and country.
I hope that Celtic complain to Uefa, and send the repair bill to Ajax.

I could be wrong, but I suspect that Mr Beckett's mother's eye operation (Letters, October 23) was not done under the NHS, and I would think that Ross Hall does not have the same financial restraints that most NHS hospitals face.
That doesn't mean poor standards are acceptable, but I would think the majority of NHS patients, the ones who don't make the press, are more than happy with their care.

The reel deal
I WAS delighted to read (October 23) that this month's Mod and the Spree festival had brought a £2.5m boost to businesses in Paisley.
It was brilliant to see the town so busy again in the evenings. Usually, after dark, the place is like a ghost town.
Here's hoping this is just the first step into breathing fresh life into the town.
I hope the Mod returns to the town.
