MY every sympathy goes out to the families of the two young men tragically lost in the canal.

As someone who grew up near the canal at Firhill, I am well aware of the dangers posed, particularly for children.

MSP Sandra White makes a very valid point when she says people need to be alert when walking along by the canal. There is usually a drop from the bank making it very difficult to get out if you do enter the water. I also think it would be very dangerous to go near the canal under the influence of alcohol.

Vote worry

With just a week before the referendum, I am very concerned about the possibility that the margin for either a Yes or No vote could be extremely small.

The ICM poll shows a 51 per cent/49 per cent margin in favour of No. It also indicated that 26 per cent felt that independence was a huge risk. There is the possibility that Scotland could be the only country to have gained independence on the basis of what is virtually a 50/50 vote.

I feel that Scotland becoming independent this way could be a disaster.

Surely taking a country into independence needs a much stronger and clearer mandate?

Get buzz back

I happened to be out in town one night at a gig and noticed the city was all quiet again.

It was such as great buzz during the Games with people milling around and cultural events and street art on just about every corner in the city.

I do hope that the powers at be are taking note and are coming up with the ideas and the cash to make Glasgow a jumping city all year round.

Surely it would be one way of luring more tourists to the city and maybe stealing some away from Edinburgh - they've got enough.

War lessons

What a touching story about pupils remembering the fallen of the St George's Cross area from World War One. They are a generation who can learn from the horrors of the past and hopefully lessons will be learned. I wish them luck.
