The role is ultimately to be an ambassador for Glasgow and Mr Winter, drawing on his wealth of experience, has never let his native city down.

He has been in Sri Lanka for the announcement that Glasgow would host the Commonwealth Games and was in Bellahouston Park when Glasgow welcomed Pope Benedict XVI.

Whether he has been at the centre of these historic occasions or attending community events, like our own Glasgow Community Champion awards – of which he has been a stalwart – he has carried out his duties with the same warmth and friendliness for which the city is so well known.

Mr Winter may be stepping down from the council but, even at the age of 75, says he will still be seeking an active role, contributing to the future of Glasgow.

The office of Lord Provost and distinction of the city's longest serving is a fitting way for Bob Winter to end his career in politics and local government.

We wish him well in his retirement from official duties, but we are just as pleased that he will continue to be a champion for Glasgow.

The City Chambers will miss him, thankfully the city won't have to.
