MANCHESTER UNITED defender Phil Jones was left to rue a set-piece blunder that cost Manchester United a 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in Istanbul last night.

Jones was given his first start after a long injury lay-off as boss Sir Alex Ferguson shuffled his squad knowing United had already booked their place in the Champions League knockout stages.

Despite the changes the Old Trafford club had chances to go ahead until a defensive lapse on 54 minutes allowed Burak Yilmaz the space to steer in a header from six yards.

"We should have switched on and dealt with that ball," said Jones.

"We got punished at a set-piece which is not our game. We shouldn't have done that."

Asked if the team had briefly gone to sleep, he added: "Possibly. We need to look at the video and see where went wrong.

"We were a bit unfortunate not to take the lead – it wasn't our night."

Jones was content to get a full run out as he looks to force his way back into the first team.

"I'm delighted. I've had a torrid six months in and out of the team," he said. "I was delighted to get 90 minutes and I hope I can push on now."

Darren Fletcher, who was also given a start, added: "It was difficult conditions and the pitch wasn't great.

"It was difficult to hear but you have to deal with that. The big problem was the pitch."
