THE first steps to recovery, if not Rio.

That's what Scotland can take when they face Wales tomorrow night.

It is a long way back from the foot of qualification Group A. But the most experienced man in the squad, Kenny Miller, knows this journey can only begin by getting three points. He acknowledges it is win or bust, even though half of the qualifying programme will remain.

The turn around has to start now, and continue when new boss Gordon Strachan takes his side to Serbia on Tuesday.

Miller is right behind Strachan's philosophy that we now have to gamble and said: "We've got to make sure we try to claw ourselves back into it, and that is only going to happen if we win games. That's got to start tomorrow night. If we win the next two games, that's only going to be the first stage of us even thinking about getting back into the group.

"At the start of tomorrow's match, we don't need to do too much gambling.

"But if at some stage we feel we need to over-commit or go for it, then we are going to have to go for it. It's three points or bust, really.

"We realise it is going to take an incredible run of results to get us back into the shake up, but you never know. If we can get a little bit of momentum, starting tomorrow, we can maybe drag ourselves back into it."

Miller is aware the Tartan Army feel badly let down by the team in this campaign which, when drawn, offered so much hope of a first finals appearance since France 1998.

The Welsh are also facing another qualification failure, but received renewed hope when they defeated Scotland in Cardiff in October.

Miller believes we can now get a similar bounce and said: "If you ask any of the Welsh players, they'll still say they have had a poor start to the group.

"But going into that game in Cardiff, it was a case of, if they didn't win, they were in real trouble.

"If we didn't win, we were in trouble, and a draw was no good to anyone. There seemed to be a renewed optimism within their set up after that game, while it was a hammer blow to us.

"Hopefully, this time it will be the other way about."

Miller, who has won 66 caps, hopes he gets the chance to lead the way and said: "This can go a little bit towards making up for those earlier results.

"It would also give us a bit of hope that we can go to Serbia and get a result as well. Then we will see how the results in the other games being played go.

"We might not be too far off the pace with a glimmer of hope of getting back into it. But tomorrow night is the first step. If we can get three points, that's that job done, then we will have to look at Serbia.

"Go and right the wrong of the first two games, get the Tartan Army back onside, and give them a performance they can be proud of."
