NOW YOU KNOW: Gers knocked out Juve in first-round victory

RANGERS have had many memorable games in Europe over the years, with one of their best results coming against Italian giants Juventus...

JAMIE (Cardonald) – Celtic played Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday night, but didn't Rangers have a famous victory against the Serie champions in the late Seventies when Jock Wallace was manager?

In the European Cup of 1978-79, Rangers were drawn to face Juventus in the first round. The Italians won the first leg 1-0.

Rangers, however, gained a famous 2-0 victory in the return leg at Ibrox.

Alex MacDonald and Gordon Smith scored the goals.

Rangers defeated PSV Eindhoven over two legs in the next round before bowing out to Cologne 2-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals.

The previous summer Wallace was replaced by John Greig.

JACK (Carluke) – I remember back in the Eighties I watched a Celtic European game on television from Celtic Park. The opposition were wearing green and white hoops and Celtic got a big win. Who was that team?

In those days the home team changed in the event of a colour clash in European ties.

I think the team you are looking for is Sporting Lisbon. Celtic beat them 5-0 in the Uefa Cup in 1984-85.

They won the tie 5-2 on aggregate.

R. MARTIN (Livingston) – Can you confirm that Hibs played in the first-ever European Cup match and that Eddie Turnbull was the first player to score a goal in a European tie.

Not quite. Hibs played in the first European tournament, but not in the first game.

That match was a 3-3 draw between Sporting Lisbon and Partizan Belgrade which was played in Lisbon on September 4, 1955.

The first goal was scored by Joao Baptista Martins of Sporting Lisbon.

Ten days later, on September 14, Hibs became the first British club to play in the European Cup when they recorded a 4-0 win in Germany against Rot-Weiss Essen.

Hibs' first goal was scored by Eddie Turnbull, making him the first British player to score a European Cup goal.

COCKNEY SCOT (Via email) – Please could you tell me who was in goal for Arsenal in the 1972 FA Cup final? I don't think it was the regular keeper Bob Wilson.

Geoff Barnett was the man in question. In this game Arsenal lost 1-0 to Leeds United.

Wilson had been injured in the semi-final.
