BERTIE AULD had two spells playing for Celtic, joining firstly from Maryhill Harp in 1955 before leaving for Birmingham City in 1961 (in between having a loan spell at Dumbarton).

He rejoined Celtic in 1965 and, of course, was one of the Lisbon Lions in 1967...

J MURRAY (Castlemilk) – On a recent visit to the Football Museum, my pal and I had the pleasure of meeting Bertie Auld. Later on, we were discussing Bertie's career and, while we knew quite a bit about him, we disagreed on one point. I say that Bertie was capped for Scotland at Under-23 level, my pal disagrees. Can you settle this difference of opinion?

Bertie won three full caps for Scotland, but our records suggest that he made only one appearance for the Under-23s.

This was a game played at Fir Park, Motherwell, on February 13, 1961, against a British Army Select.

The Army team was very strong and contained a number of top Scottish players, including Ron Yeats, Jim Baxter and Alex Young.

Two goals by Denis Law and one by Ian St John gave Scotland a 3-2 win, and the Scots lined up as follows:

Haffey (Celtic), Delaney (Motherwell), Sim (Aberdeen), McLintock (Leicester), McNeill (Celtic), Miller (Dunfermline), McLeod (Hibs), Hilley (Third Lanark), St John (Motherwell), Law (Manchester City) and Auld (Celtic).

W DAVIDSON (Bridgeton) – In the Evening Times column "On This Day", you refer to a match played on April 4, 1970, when the brothers Jim and Tommy McLean both scored for Kilmarnock in a

2-2 draw against Rangers. I cannot remember this and would be obliged if you could provide match details.

This match was played at Rugby Park and Rangers went into the lead when John Greig scored in the 11th minute.

Jim McLean equalised for Killie after 51 minutes and, four minutes later, Tommy scored with a penalty kick to make it 2-1 for the Ayrshire men.

Colin Stein then had a spot-kick saved before Willie Henderson equalised for Rangers.

The teams were:

Kilmarnock: McLaughlan, King, Dickson, Gilmour, Rodman, McGrory, T. McLean, Morrison, Mathie, J. McLean, Cook. Substitute: McDonald.

Rangers: McCloy, Jardine, Johansen, Greig, Jackson, Smith, Henderson, Conn, Stein, MacDonald and Johnston. Substitute: Penman.

The referee was Mr J W Paterson (Bothwell).

J ROBERTSON (Maryhill) – I remember going to Firhill in the mid-Seventies to see Partick Thistle play Kilmarnock. They were both going for promotion, and a big crowd was at the game. I think Thistle won. Can you give me the score, scorers and crowd. And also tell me if both clubs were promoted at the end of the season?

I think the game you are looking for took place on January 3, 1976. Thistle won 2-0.

The goals were scored by Rooney and Craig. A crowd of 11,500 watched the match.

Thistle ended up as First Division champions and Killie were also promoted as runners-up.
