RAITH ROVERS managed to qualify to play in European competition in only one occasion in their history after beating Celtic in the League Cup final after a penalty shoot-out in 1994, landing a place for the following season...

BIG JOE (Via e-mail) – Back in the nineties Raith Rovers played Bayern Munich in an away European tie and led 1-0 at half-time. There is a famous picture of the electronic scoreboard in the Olympic Stadium showing the score. My friend and I disagree on one point, though. Was this a first of second leg match?

This was a Uefa Cup third round, second leg match, played on October 31, 1995. Bayern fought back to win the game on the night 2-1.

The Germans had previously won the first leg (played at Easter Road) 2-0. In earlier rounds Raith had knocked out Goto (Faroe Islands) and Akranes (Iceland) in previous rounds.

JIM (Govan) – Rangers will be playing against Stirling Albion on Saturday in the Third Division. I remember Albion beating Rangers 2-0 at Annfield in the early 50's. Can you tell me about it?

The game was in September 1953 when a huge crowd of 24,000 saw the Binos win 2-0 against the champions . The scorers were Woodburn (o.g.) and Whitehead.

JOHN (Dennistoun) – My pal supports the Honest Men of Ayr United. He recalls his team beating Celtic in a tournament called the Drybrough Cup. Can you give me details of the game and the tournament?

On Sunday July 27, 1980, Ayr Utd beat Celtic 1-0 at Parkhead in the first round of the Drybrough Cup.

Ex-Ranger Eric Morris stunned the 16,000 crowd to score 3 minutes from the end.

Initially the Drybrough Cup was open to the four highest-scoring teams in both Division 1 and Division 2 in Scotland. In the semi-final Ayr lost 2-1 to St Mirren.

JOHN (Erskine) – My grand-father recalls Greenock Morton hammering their fellow Clydesiders

Dumbarton in the 1950's.

Can you supply details?

The game he is probably thinking about was in September 1953. Morton won 8-0 through goals from Hinshelwood, Gourlay (2), Hannigan (3) and Linwood (2).

GRAY (Stirling) – When Stirling Albion played at Annfield, could you supply details of when and who the opposition were at the opening match when floodlights were used?

The Annfield lights were switched on against Birmingham City on November 27, 1961.

A crowd of 6000 saw Albion lose by 3-1 to a City side that had Bertie Auld in the forward line and he scored one of the goals.

Because it was a friendly, both sides used substitutes with Stirling using 6 and Birmingham 3.
