SCOTLAND have had many memorable matches against Wales over the years, with various degrees of highs and lows...

S STEVENSON (Airdrie) – I have a fairly good recollection of the Scotland v Wales World Cup qualifier, which was played at Anfield in 1977. I can clearly remember our 2-0 victory through a disputed penalty and a great header from Kenny Dalglish. I know that we won the home match 1-0, but I am unable to remember the details. Can you tell me the Scotland line-up, goalscorer, etc?

The Hampden encounter was played on Wednesday, November 17, 1976, in front of a crowd of 63,000.

The Scotland line-up was: Alan Rough (Partick Thistle), Danny McGrain (Celtic), Willie Donachie (Man City), John Blackley (Hibs), Gordon McQueen (Leeds Utd), Archie Gemmill (Derby County), Kenny Burns (Birmingham City), Bruce Rioch (Derby County), Eddie Gray (Leeds Utd), Kenny Dalglish (Celtic), Joe Jordan (Leeds Utd).

Substitutes were Asa Hartford (Man City) for Rioch after 67 minutes and Willie Pettigrew (Motherwell) for Gray after 84 minutes.

The only goal of the game was scored in the 15th minute, when a low cross from Danny McGrain was turned into his own net by Welsh full-back Ian Evans.

TOMMY (Linwood) – St Mirren played at Hampden in the League Cup final last Sunday, and Scotland against Wales being the next match there stirred the memories of older supporters of Willie Telfer, of St Mirren, being selected for Scotland v Wales in 1953 for a Home International match. What information do you have on this match?

This match was on November 4, 1953. It was a World Cup qualifier and ended in a 3-3 draw.

This turned out to be Telfer's only full cap. In the final minute, with Scotland leading 3-2, John Charles, the legendary Welsh centre- forward, broke past Telfer and scored the equaliser.

Telfer was much criticised for not committing a "professional foul" and bringing Charles down from behind.

It was reported that Telfer was quoted privately as saying he did not commit the foul out of respect for the game and the Scotland jersey he was wearing.

JOHN (Cambuslang) – Scotland play Wales tomorrow at Hampden Park, but who do they play next?

Scotland play Serbia next Tuesday in Novi Sad.

The match will be played at the Karadorde Stadium, which is the home of FK Vojvodina.
