NOW YOU KNOW: Wilkins screamer was best of five for Gers

GRAEME SOUNESS became player/manager for Rangers in 1986 and began signing top English internationalists for the club.

During his time in charge they had some memorable games against their major rivals Celtic...

ALEX (Govan) – Can you confirm that during Graeme Souness's reign at Rangers, they scored five goals in a game against Celtic?

On Saturday, August 27, 1988, Rangers beat Celtic 5-1 at Ibrox.

Frank McAvennie opened the scoring for Celtic after only five minutes, but goals from McCoist (2), Wilkins, Drinkell and Walters sealed a remarkable victory for the Gers.

ALBERT (Govanhill) – In a pub debate last night we argued that Bobby Collins scored three penalties in a 3-0 victory for Celtic against Aberdeen and the same Aberdeen defender was the offender on each occasion. Can you settle the debate?

Absolutely true. In September 1953 Celtic beat Aberdeen 3-0 at Celtic Park.

Collins did score three penalties, two in the first half and one in the second, and on each occasion Aberdeen full- back Mitchell was the culprit.

STEVIE (Giffnock) – Kilmarnock beat Celtic at Parkhead last Saturday for the first time in 57 years, but my friend recalls a young Killie side in the 1970's beating Rangers at Rugby Park. Can you give me details of that Rangers game?

The game he is probably thinking about was in October 1972 when Kilmarnock beat Rangers 2-1.

A young Jim Stewart was in goal for Killie and an Eddie Morrison double sealed Kilmarnock's first points of the season.

TAM & JOCK (Coatbridge) – Friendly argument in our bowling club. When Airdrie won the Scottish Cup in 1924, their centre-forward was Gallacher. Was this the great Hughie Gallacher or was it a player called James Gallacher?

Airdrie did have a player at one time named James Gallacher, but this was long after the 1924 Cup Final.

James was at Airdrie from 1942-1944, but the centre-forward in Airdrie's historic Cup Final win over Hibs was the great Hughie Gallacher.

The Diamonds' 2-0 victory was played on April 19, 1924, at Ibrox, with both goals being scored by inside-right Russell.

All-time great, centre-forward Hughie joined Airdrie from Queen of the South in 1921 and left the Lanarkshire club for Newcastle United in 1925. He later played for Chelsea, Derby County, Notts County and Grimsby Town.

Throughout his club career Hughie was a noted goalscorer and he brought his scoring touch into the international arena.

He was capped 20 times for Scotland and scored a remarkable total of 23 goals.
