A COMMUNITY festival has received an £11,000 boost for this year's event.

The cash from national agency EventScotland will ensure an environmental impact study will be carried out at Kirkintilloch Canal Festival in August.

It's the third year EventScotland has supported the festival which last year attracted 27,000 visitors to the East Dunbartonshire town.

Paul Bush OBE, chief operating officer at EventScotland, said: "The environmental impact study will ensure that the Kirkintilloch Canal Festival continues to grow in a way that is both sustainable and complementary to its surroundings."

Since 2006, the Canal Festival has witnessed a three-fold increase in visitor numbers, and is now worth around £300,000 to the local economy.

It was first held in 2001 and celebrates the Scottish town as well as the Forth & Clyde Canal which runs through its heart.
