HUNDREDS of tenants in a deprived area of Glasgow are getting their homes revamped in a £15million makeover.

The cash is being spent on 400 flats and houses - and the surrounding community - in the Gorbals.

The properties - four run-down multi-storey blocks and maisonettes on Waddell Court and Commercial Court - are to get a complete overhaul, including new kitchens and bathrooms, new central heating systems and rewiring.

Improved security measures such as new balconies and common entrances are also part of the refurbishment programme, as is insulation and external cladding.

Glasgow Housing Association is providing the £15million funding package to pay for the work.

Work on the flats, which will be carried out by CCG Construction Group, is expected to start in the summer, but tenants and homeowners are being encouraged to have their say on the plans.

Danny Bradley, GHA's assistant director of Investment and Regeneration, said: "The work planned for the Gorbals area will dramatically improve the properties and neighbourhood, ensuring better homes and better lives for our tenants.

"We've been working closely with tenants to ensure modern, refurbished properties they can be proud to live in. It is the tenants themselves on the local housing committee who have prioritied the spending."

Plans to improve the outdoor environment of the area are also in the pipeline, with new landscaping and green spaces expected to get the go-ahead.

Kirsty Fotheringham, community housing manager of New Gorbals Local Housing Organisation, said the entire community would benefit from the cash injection.

She added: "This is a major regeneration project for the Gorbals that will deliver improved living conditions for residents as well as considerable environmental benefits for the community as a whole.

"The initiative is part of our strategy to deliver an enhanced standard of living to the community and ensure an environment that is consistent with 21st century life."

The £15m project in the Gorbals is the latest in a string of improvements carried out by GHA since it took over Glasgow's housing stock from the council in March 2003.

According to GHA, more than £370m has already been spent on repairs and modernisation - with a further £470m to be invested over the next three years.

Part of that is going on eight major regeneration projects in Gallowgate, Laurieston, East Govan/Ibrox, Maryhill, North Toryglen, Red Road, Shawbridge and Sighthill.
