A PRIVATE school has warned staff they could lose their jobs after a drop in pupil numbers.

The fall has led to financial difficulties at Belmont House in Newton Mearns, near Glasgow.

Nine members of the school's administrative and finance team are currently in talks about their future and one member of staff has already been made redundant. The school said none of the teaching staff was affected.

It is understood action was taken after the parents of 20% of the school's 350 pupils decided to remove their children this summer.

The decline has been blamed on the recession but one parent said that families, who pay annual fees of up to £9045, were "voting with their feet".

The parent said: "Academic performance is well short of the mark compared to other private schools."

School principal Melville Shanks said the recession was more of a factor but admitted the exam results "undoubtedly caused a great deal of concern".
