FANS of 80s music are taking a shine to a new brew named jointly after Spandau Ballet frontman Tony Hadley and his band's mega-hit Gold.

Hadley's Gold beer has been unveiled at Frasers store in Buchanan Street, Glasgow, with Tony helping fans lap up the new tipple. Named after one of the legendary group's most memorable hits, it is a premium version of Hadley's Golden Ale and is said to have "a smooth honey finish".

The 49-year-old is actively involved in developing new ales for Red Rat Craft brewery's expanding range as the stage star is a part owner of the firm.

The new romantic' music heartthrob said at yesterday's launch: "I like all of our ales but this one is probably my favourite. It really goes down a treat, you have to be careful because before you know it you've drank three pints. Calling it Gold', given its richness and longevity of flavour, seemed to be most appropriate!

"With this new ale we've reinvented an original classic and, with Spandau Ballet reforming this year for a final farewell tour, we'll be giving the classic hit Gold a new lease of life too!"

The beer's launch comes as the band reforms following a 20 year hiatus, with their farewell tour starting in October including a Glasgow date.

Younger fans with an interest in TV soaps may recall fellow Spandau member Martin Kemp playing EastEnder's Steve Owen.

Tony said of his interest in brewing: "I was contacted after one of my concerts to see if I was interested in making my own ale, and I thought why not'.

"It's been pretty amazing I didn't expect it to be so successful.."

His company has supplied ales to firms including Threshers, Sainsbury's, Frasers.

Tony said of the rebirth of the band: "I'm having a fantastic time, it's been really good.

"Although we've been apart for 20 years, when we're back rehearsing it feels like we've never been apart..

"I've told them I'll bring down a few bottles for them to tour."

Spandau Ballet play Glasgow's SECC on October 17.
