A RACIST thug high on drink and drugs who thrust a jagged bottle into a man's neck has been jailed for four years.

Scott McFarlane forced Wesley Seroot to write out a £1000 cheque and fill two suitcases with his belongings in the March 16 attack in Paisley.

McFarlane broke a bottle over Mr Seroot's head and thrust the jagged weapon into his victim's neck.

He then told South African-born Mr Seroot to "get back to your own country".

Before the attack McFarlane, who was 16 at the time, had taken 30 to 40 valium tablets, smoked cannabis, drank three litres of cider, cans of lager and vodka.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard that he had been abusing illegal drugs and drink over the last nine years.

His counsel, Edith Forrest, said it began with him smoking cannabis "a couple of times a week" at the age of eight.

On the day of the attack McFarlane and a female friend met Mr Seroot, 20, and his girlfriend and had initially got on well.

But McFarlane later went to a flat in Brabloch Park, Paisley, where he hit Mr Seroot on the head with a bottle and thrust the broken bottle into his neck, near to the jugular. The victim suffered a seven centimetre wound.

McFarlane then presented knives at Mr Seroot and his girlfriend, Deborah Black, demanded money and threatened them with violence if they contacted the police.

McFarlane, described as a prisoner, admitted assaulting Mr Seroot to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

He also admitted assaulting and robbing him and Miss Black and making racist remarks to Mr Seroot.

Lord Macphail ordered that as well as detention in a young offenders' institution McFarlane should also serve an extended sentence for a further two years when he will be kept under supervision.
