RANGERS were today closing in on American left winger DaMarcus Beasley. Talks with his Dutch club, PSV Eindhoven, and the player's agent have progressed well over the past week and the Ibrox club hope to secure the 25-year-old soon.
Despite interest from England, the lightning-quick Beasley wants to move to Rangers. And the deal could even be finalised with the Ibrox club's hierarchy in the States this weekend.
Manager Walter Smith and chief executive Martin Bain are attending the NARSA fans convention in Naples, Florida. Beasley played the full 90 minutes for the USA last night as they beat Guatemala 1-0 in their Gold Cup opening match in Los Angeles.
His Virginia-based agent, Lyle Yorks, would only say: "At the moment, DaMarcus is still a PSV player. But I can confirm there has been firm interest in him from the UK and talks are on-going."
Smith has tracked Beasley after being impressed with his displays for the USA in the World Cup last summer in Germany.
Meanwhile, there has been no new offer to Kilmarnock for Steven Naismith, with the 20-year-old now on a family holiday in Spain.
I understand Rangers will now keep a watching brief on the situation and see if anyone else comes in with a firm offer for the SPFA Young Player of the Year.
They were prepared to increase their initial £600,000 offer that was rejected by Killie. But the figures being banded around by Rugby Park chairman Michael Johnston have forced them to step back. Reports in Sweden today claimed Rangers were looking at 21-year-old IFK Gothenburg full-back Matthias Bjarsmyr, an ex-team-mate of Karl Svensson.
