RANGERS striker Kris Boyd is sure to rediscover his scoring touch in front of goal - thanks to the intense competition for places up front at Ibrox.

And the legendary marksman could be the man to gun down Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the second round of the League Cup tomorrow night.

That was the verdict of fit-again forward Jon Daly today ahead of the eagerly-anticipated showdown with the SPFL Premiership high flyers.

Boyd squandered several gilt-edged scoring opportunities as Rangers ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over Raith Rovers at Stark's Park on Friday night.

The 31-year-old's out-of-sorts display in the final third meant that his barren run in the league in the 2014/15 campaign continued.

He has failed to net in the second tier in five starts now - and his inability to find the target is clearly starting to get to him.

The former Scotland international cut a hugely frustrated figure as he was substituted late on in the game through in Fife.

But the predator, who has netted five times in the cup competitions, is still working tirelessly during games for his boyhood heroes and creating chances.

And Daly, who last week made his first appearance since undergoing knee surgery in July, is confident the goals will come for his team-mate soon.

For the Irishman, the Light Blues' top scorer last term, believes the strength of the Gers squad just now will help to keep him fully focused.

"We only have Cammy Bell, who is coming back from a shoulder injury, and Kenny Miller, who has picked up a calf strain, out injured at the moment," he said.

"When everyone is fit we have a really strong squad and that means the players in the team are going to have to perform and play well to stay involved.

"The manager has plenty of options. Everyone has to be on their toes because they know if their form dips somebody will come in and take their place.

"Kris has been playing well and getting in good positions to score. The ball is just not falling for him at the moment. But that happens when you are a striker.

"He is a quality player and a quality goalscorer. I have no doubt that he will score very soon and go on and score a lot of goals for the club this season.

"The Inverness match is a massive one for the club and one that everyone is keen to do well in. I am sure Kris will fancy his chances in it.

"He's played at the top level in Scotland before, including last season with Kilmarnock when he scored a lot of goals, and will relish the chance to be involved, as we all will."

Daly, who hit the target 21 times as Rangers went undefeated in League One last term, came on towards the end of the emphatic victory over Raith.

The 31-year-old is hoping it will, despite the presence of both Boyd and Miller at Ibrox now, be the first of many appearances for the Glasgow club this term.

And he is hoping that his involvement can help ensure that Rangers continue to pressurise Championship leaders Hearts - who are now just a point in front - and challenge in the cups.

Daly said: "I missed pre-season which is always difficult as a player. You are playing catch-up straight away. I only got three days of pre-season and then I broke down. It is obviously hard to get back fit after that.

"But I have got a couple of weeks' training under my belt now and I am just delighted to be back out on the park and back in amongst it. Hopefully I can contribute to the team in the games we have coming up and in the remainder of the season

"It wasn't ideal getting injured. The manager signed a couple of strikers in the summer and we already had Nicky Clark, Dean Shiels and myself there.

"There is a lot of competition at the club for the forward places now and the last thing you want is to get injured more or less straight away.

"But I got my head around the situation quickly, have worked hard with the physio and hopefully there will be no more issues now.

"I will just get myself right and get back in the team. I don't think it will be too long until I get myself up to speed."

Daly feels the success that Clark, who has been one of the most consistent Rangers players this season, has enjoyed shows he can feature prominently in the months ahead.

He said: "There are going to be dips in form and injuries this season and we will all be used. Nicky got his chance when Kenny got injured and he has taken it.

"He came on against Falkirk and, for me, he changed the game. He got a very good goal and ensured the team picked up all three points.

"Since then, he hasn't looked back. Kenny came back from his injury, but since then he has got another injury.

"It has given Nicky another chance to stake a claim. I thought he was excellent the other night again and took his goal superbly well."
