FORMER Rangers captain Craig Paterson is confident Nicky Law will be an Ibrox hit if boss Ally McCoist can clinch a deal with the Motherwell star.

As revealed in SportTimes last week, McCoist has held talks with Law regarding a Bosman switch this summer, but the 25-year-old is also attracting interest from clubs in the Championship.

The Englishman has had another superb campaign for Stuart McCall's Steelmen, and former Fir Park hero Paterson reckons Law would be the ideal man to add a touch of class to the Light Blues midfield.

He told SportTimes: "I think Nicky Law is exactly the type of signing Rangers need. He has been outstanding this year for Motherwell, who have finished second in the SPL and have qualified for Europe yet again.

"So you are buying someone you know can play at the highest level in Scotland, which is obviously the level Rangers want to get back to as quickly as possible.

"He is the right age for them as well. Rangers will hope he is in his prime and playing the best football of his career over the next few years and when they get back to the SPL.

"I think he is the kind of signing they need. They have got to win the division they are in next year, but they have got to look to bring in players who will be good enough to compete at the top end when Rangers get back there."

McCoist was able to convince SPL stars Ian Black, David Templeton and Dean Shiels to drop down into the Irn-Bru Third Division last summer as they helped Rangers to their first title on the road back to the top.

And Paterson reckons the Ibrox boss can pull off another major coup by getting Law to spurn the Championship in favour of a move to the Second Division.

He said: "People who have played in Scotland and played at Ibrox will realise just how big a club Rangers are and that they are a big draw.

"They are a global brand, they are supported worldwide. I am sure Nicky will speak to people who have played with Rangers or do play with Rangers so he will get a feel of the club and know exactly what he is going in to.

"It would be good to see. We see players from our top clubs going down to the Championship, and even lower, every year.

"We need our top teams and our top players in the SPL. Nicky will know the quality of the club he is joining. I am sure he is quite settled up here and I am sure he will see Rangers as a great opportunity."
