ALLY McCoist has called on his Rangers players to be more ruthless up front - despite seeing them book a place in the Petrofac Training Cup semi-final.

McCoist's men defeated East Fife 2-0 at New Bayview in a re-arranged quarter-final fixture last night thanks to goals in each half from Jon Daly and Ian Black.

But the Gers boss, whose side now take on SPFL Championship rivals Alloa away in the last four, was disappointed they failed to take more chances up front.

He said: "I will always settle for a comfortable victory and a clean sheet.

"But it wouldn't be me if I didn't have a moan. You obviously want to score more goals and I did say that to the lads after the game.

"Last night was an opportunity for our midfielders and strikers to get on the scoresheet and get their goals tally up for the season.

"There has to be a real desire to score goals in every game, not just big games. We have to try and score at all times within the game."

McCoist added: "I would probably like to see a little bit more selfishness and desire to go and score more goals.

"We have got options up front now and we have got guys who we feel can play together no matter what combination.

"Between the four out-and-out centre forwards we have got goals in the team."

McCoist handed Daly, who missed the beginning of the season after undergoing a knee operation, a start and was pleased when he netted again.

He said: "I am delighted for big Jon. His fitness is good after the operation and he is looking more like his old self.

"He scored 25 goals for us last year and has now scored three in two games for us.

"It is important that strikers continue to score goals and that we get goals from all areas of the park."

McCoist preferred Darren McGregor to Bilel Mohsni at centre- half in Methil - despite the latter being available for selection in the cup tie. And he admitted he was pleased that he now has competition for places in defence as well as up front.

He said: "Darren has been great. He has initially played right-back and that has not been a bad thing for him.

"It has given him an idea of the team and an idea of the club. All of a sudden, he has gone back into his more recognised position and has looked very comfortable.

"I have been pleased for Darren. We want competition all over the park and Darren and big Lee did well last night."

Meanwhile, McCoist admitted he will speak to defender Richard Foster after the right-back exchanged words with his own supporters during the match.

He said: "I didn't hear or see anything, but you will never win that battle."
