KENNY McDOWALL today predicted getting full houses at Ibrox again will boost Rangers' hopes of winning promotion to the SPFL Premiership.

Boyhood supporters Dave King taking over the running of the Glasgow giants is set to get Gers fans flocking back to their games.

Home crowds have plummeted during the 2014/15 campaign due to deep unhappiness at how the League One champions were being run.

And form on the pitch has nosedived as attendances in league games at Ibrox have fallen below 20,000 for the first time in nearly 30 years.

But McDowall, whose side take on Queen of the South at home in a second tier fixture on Tuesday, reckons the improved backing will help his charges.

He said: "Our supporters have been fantastic. They have been through a helluva lot these past four years so I can't thank them enough.

"They've stood by this club. We always have a great away support so I know they will back us on Saturday.

"It would be great to see this stadium full again come Tuesday. That will give the players a massive lift.

"It's like an extra man in these situations and I'm sure the boys would rise to the occasion. You can't beat a packed stadium."

McDowall added: "You notice when the place isn't full, but do you want to use it as an excuse? I think you know the answer to that.

"We haven't done well enough on the park and that's where our problems have come. But we're at the business end of the season and there's still time.

"It's important we keep the performances levels higher than they have been."

McDowall, who is working his 12 month notice period after resigning, has admitted the Championship game with Cowdenbeath on Saturday could be his last match in charge.

He said: "It could very well be, but I could have said that right from the start.

"This is probably my last game, but I have handed my notice in and have 10 months or so to do and if I need to be here for the 10 months I have said all along that's what I will do.

"Whether I am in charge or coaching - if the club need me I am here."
