KRIS BOYD today insisted he is still capable of finding the kind of form he showed in his first spell at Rangers.

The Ibrox forward made a candid admission last week that he was not playing well enough to earn a new contract, and that he had not scored enough goals this season.

Boyd has netted 10 goals this term - but still has his sights set on hitting the 20-goal mark.

"I am not lacking confidence in front of goal," he insisted. "I have never been one for that. You go through bad spells and this has been one of them, but I won't blame anyone else. It is me who has missed the chances.

"For me, the most important thing is to get into those situations and I do believe I am capable of coming back and going again.

"I still think any striker worth his salt at Rangers has to be hitting the 20-goals-a-season mark - at least. I said what I said last week because it is the truth, but I still believe I can lift it again for the last few months of the season.

"What I do know is I have got two or three months to get my act together and to start scoring goals at the rate I should be - and the rate I know I can.

"That's a challenge for myself. If you are worthy of a new contract then you need to go and score goals week in, week out."

And Boyd is well aware any goals he can bring will aid the club hugely as they seek to earn a play-off spot.

With Hearts effectively out of reach, the onus is on third-placed Rangers to try to remain in the reckoning for one of the play-off spots - something that is not guaranteed given the inconsistent form which has dogged the team all season.

"I was fortunate enough in my first spell at the club that I scored goals at a rate everyone has come to expect from me," he said. "But I am still confident I can find that form again and, hopefully, if I can do that, then it will help us to get into the kind of league position we think we should be in.

"We are not a given to make the play-offs. There are a few round about us and we will need to fight for it. We need to work hard between now and the end of the season to go and beat the teams round about us."

This season has been a difficult one for Rangers as they have toiled in the Championship against teams who Boyd believes have no fear going into games against the Ibrox side.

And he has called on caretaker boss Kenny McDowall's side to rediscover the kind of form that had teams overawed going into games against them.

"You can't afford to drop any points at this club," said the 31-year-old. " You want to win every game and we are under pressure to win games.

"In years gone by, teams have feared coming up against Rangers, but right now I don't think that is the case. Teams are coming, trying to play and are confident of winning the games. We need to get back to the stage where we have got that fear factor about us.

"I think you can see that. When you look back at the performances from this campaign, teams are not sitting in against us and being hard to beat, they are trying to beat us. We have struggled because teams have done that against us and. for myself and probably others who have been coming back, you have always been the front-foot against teams creating chances and putting them under pressure. whereas it's not been the case this season."
