RANGERS boss Stuart McCall today warned his players they must perform better if they want to claim second spot in the SPFL Championship.

The Gers bounced straight back from their 3-0 defeat to Queen of the South against Raith Rovers yesterday.

But McCall wasn't entirely satisfied with his side's display in their emphatic 4-0 victory.

And he has told his charges they will have to improve to overcome bottom-placed Livingston at Almondvale on Wednesday night.

The Light Blues can move three points clear of Hibs and into second spot in the second-tier table if they triumph through in West Lothian.

But the team managed by former Celtic striker Mark Burchill is fighting for its survival and has won three games in succession - as well as landing the Challenge Cup earlier this month.

McCall said: "We scored some nice goals against Raith - but I thought we were sloppy at times. For 20 minutes in the second half we went through the motions and we can't afford to do that.

"The performance against Raith was pleasing in a lot of senses; we scored some nice goals, played some decent football and kept a clean sheet.

"But the game against Livingston on Wednesday will be totally different. It will be a different challenge.

"Livingston are flying at the minute. We need to be ready and we need to be better and I have told the players that."

Rangers could have edged ahead of Hibs, who beat Hearts 2-0 in the Edinburgh derby at Easter Road, if they had scored more goals.

Alan Stubbs' side has a goal difference of 30 after beating their city rivals - while McCall's team has a goal difference of 28 after their comfortable win yesterday.

But the Gers boss said: "We could have done more to improve our goal difference. In the second half we had a couple of chances. But I think that is being a bit disrespectful to Raith Rovers."
