MARK WARBURTON insists he won't sign players just for the sake of it this summer as he attempts to overhaul his Rangers squad.

The 52-year-old was confirmed as the new Light Blues boss yesterday and has got down to business as he looks to transform the Gers' fortunes on the park.

Warburton and assistant David Weir have inherited a squad low on numbers and short of quality ahead of the new Championship campaign.

But there will be no rush to splash the cash and add bodies without making sure the right players are joining the Gers.

He said: "You've got to look at number one targets, number two targets, long-term options, short-term options, staffing targets.

"You've got to be prepared. I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't have that but it's not about the numbers.

"If I don't get any players who won't add value then I won't sign anyone. It's as simple as that. What's the point of signing a number?

"We've got to sign a player who brings something to this football club. We've had some positive discussions and hopefully we can move forward."

Chairman Dave King revealed last week that there will be no 'upper limit' to the budget for the rebuilding job at Ibrox as the board set a out a three year plan to return Rangers to the top of Scottish football.

Warburton will be tasked with acquiring players with a potential sell-on value and will have by far the biggest resources available in the Championship next term.

And, when asked if he had sought assurances over his budget, Warburton said: "Yes absolutely, or else we wouldn't have taken the opportunity.

"But at the same time our job is to make sure we bring to the club players who are good for the club, they have to represent that value.

"I'm not just talking about the balance sheet, but how they conduct their business and how they deal with fans, how they show.

"At Brentford, if you had one of those days when you couldn't hit a barn door from five feet but still gave 100 per cent effort, the fans will have you. Nothing changes here."
