RANGERS defender Darren McGregor insists he is happy to keep playing at right-back but sees his future with the club at centre-half.

The 29-year-old star has been played out wide since Richard Foster picked up an injury against Hearts at the start of last month.

McGregor admitted he had only limited experience in the position before the switch but has done brilliantly there for Ally McCoist's side.

The former Cowdenbeath and St Mirren player, who joined the Gers for free during the summer, has helped the League One champions put their shaky start to the 2014/15 campaign behind them and go on a five-game winning run.

Having turned full-time just four years ago and having suffered two cruciate ligament injuries in a year, McGregor is delighted just to be playing for such a major club.

So he is not going to quibble about where he is used in the starting line-up. But he is clear about his preference for a role in the heart of the back line.

McGregor, who had a spell with Juniors outfit Arniston Rangers from 2006 to 2008, has been involved in every one of the Light Blues' competitive matches this season.

He confessed: "Right-back is a fairly new position for me. I had played there in the past, including when I was with St Mirren, but not much.

"I am just pleased that the manager has confidence in me to play there. I have tried to repay his faith in me by doing as well as I can.

"There's a lot of competition at the club for places at centre- half, with Lee McCulloch, Bilel Mohsni and Marius Zaliukas all in there.

"When Richard got injured I was given my chance in the team at right back and I was happy to take it. I think I have got better with playing more games there. The gaffer has been very good with me and has told me to concentrate on my strengths.

"That is exactly what I have tried to do. I have focused on defending well for the team but have also got forward and attacked whenever I could.

"And I was pleased to score in the league match against Dumbarton at Ibrox."

Foster has been ruled out with a calf strain since the 2-1 defeat to SPFL Championship leaders Hearts on the opening day of the league campaign but is set to return soon.

THE former Aberdeen and Bristol City defender is hoping to be in contention for a place in the Rangers side for their meeting with Raith Rovers at Stark's Park, Kirkcaldy, a week tomorrow.

If 29-year-old Foster can reclaim full fitness in time for the game against last season's Ramsdens Cup winners, it will give manager McCoist a huge selection dilemma.

Should Foster go straight back into the team? And, if he does, who should play in the middle of his rearguard?

McCoist would have to pick from McCulloch, McGregor, Mohsni and Zaliukas.

Gers captain McCulloch has been excellent in the centre of midfield in recent weeks and has pitched in with goals.

Meanwhile, fiery Tunisian Mohsni and Zaliukas, from Lithuania, have had shaky moments defensively despite both getting on the scoresheet at the other end of the park.

McGregor added: "I will play wherever the manager wants me to but my preference is to play at centre-half.

"It will be difficult to get a game there as we have a lot of quality players and internationalists at this club. But I'll keep working hard and we will see what comes of it."
