IT is no surprise that Lewis Macleod has been linked with a few clubs in England this week.

Teams down near the bottom of the Championship will be looking for an influential player to bring in to turn their season around in January.

A free-scoring midfielder like Lewis fits the bill perfectly.

Championship club Blackburn Rovers have been tipped to make a bid for him.

And I wouldn't be surprised if Newcastle United in the Premier League were weighing him up as well.

Rangers fans would be distraught to see him go as he has been arguably their most consistent player this season.

And it would certainly impact upon Ally McCoist's side on the park in a big way.

But if a substantial sum is offered for Lewis - or, for that matter, for Lee Wallace - then there is no doubt in my mind that he will go.

It will be nothing to do with Ally if that transpires. He wants to keep all of his best players at the club.

Selling the likes of Macleod and Wallace won't be good for the club and it won't be good for the team.

But £2 million or £3 million coming into a club that continues to lose huge sums on a monthly basis will help to pay the wages.

Ally has been told he can bring in some of Newcastle United's young players next month.

But they will just be loan signings and won't cost Rangers anything.

Of course, it all depends what plans Mike Ashley has for Rangers.

Hopefully that will come out at the AGM later this month.

But if Macleod and any other first team players are offloaded the fans will ask: "Why was the £16 million funding package that the Dave King consortium offered turned down?"

Now, club officials have claimed there was no proof of funding from that group. But I am sure many fans would like to see King involved.

They know he is a Rangers fan and know he has the means to make a difference to Rangers.

I have said for a long time now that I would like to see him involved and have not ruled out that possibility.
