WHEN I signed for Rangers as a schoolboy way back in 1968 I was a Dundee United fan.

But from the minute I stepped inside the front door of Ibrox and walked up the marble staircase to the manager's office, I was gripped by the club.

It happens to most Gers players. Just look at some of the foreigners who have joined over the years. Even if they only stay for a season or two, the place remains in their hearts forever.

It is such a big club and the supporters are just so fanatical. It is wonderful to be a part of. It definitely leaves a lasting impression on you.

Rangers has been a part of my life for over 40 years and, for the majority of that time, it has been fantastic.

In the 1990s especially, when we won nine-in-a-row, we had some real quality players and attracted huge crowds.

But these days, sadly, the club is being tossed around like a plastic toy in a hurricane. It is getting too much for a lot of people. And I can quite understand their frustrations.

For generations of Rangers fans, for fathers and grandfathers, this club means everything. Like every Rangers follower, I want to see them get back to where they belong.

But now we have got to a stage where Ibrox, a listed building and the spiritual home of Rangers for over 100 years, could be lost to the club.

That is not an exaggeration. It could happen.

If Mike Ashley gets security over the stadium in return for a £10million loan then it could go. That is frightening.

No wonder so many supporters protested outside the front door of the stadium last Friday night before the abandoned game with Hearts.

They said: "Enough is enough. We've taken as much as we can. We've stood on the sidelines for too long. Now is the time to fight."

We have people standing on the sidelines who are willing to put in near enough the same money as Mike Ashley is - and they don't want Ibrox as security. So exactly what is the problem?

We don't know what is going on in board meetings. We can only speculate. Only the directors know. Rangers now have one last chance to get people - whether it is The Three Bears, Dave King or Robert Sarver - in who can sort it out.

King has called an EGM and the outcome of it will determine the future of the club. As we have seen this week, the lobbying is going to be incredible.

We are going to get statements from those who want to come in and rebukes from those who want to stay in power.

It started off with the Sky Sports News interview with Charles Green in his hospital bed. I have to admit that it made me feel sick watching it.

He brought Mike Ashley and everybody who is on the board just now to the club, so he isn't exactly going to go against them, is he?

That interview was just the start of the campaigning. I think you are going to see a lot more of that sort of thing in the coming weeks.

They can bicker and sling insults as much as they want, but what is important is who has 51 per cent of the votes at the EGM.

We are going to get spin from both camps in the weeks ahead, but I think King will get the backing he needs.

If you look at the people who own the shares, then a fair few of them will go for a new regime. It is up to the present board to say why they should still be there and get people to vote for them.

If you thought campaigning ahead of the independence referendum last September was fierce, you haven't seen anything. Because this is the Last Chance Saloon for everyone involved.

Of course, it is all ifs, buts and maybes just now. The next seven weeks are going to be major.
