THE League Cup game against Falkirk on Tuesday night was the fifth game in succession that Kris Boyd has failed to score for Rangers.

But I think Allly McCoist should persevere with Boyd - starting with the SPFL Championship game with Hibs at Ibrox on Monday night.

The goals will definitely come for the out-of-sorts striker. Yes, Ally has options up front if he wants to drop Boyd with Jon Daly being available for selection once again.

But Kris is playing extremely well for the Gers at the moment even though he is not scoring.

When he was at Ibrox before if he failed to scored then, as often as not, he failed to contribute to the team.

That was his style of play. But he has changed. That was driven home to me watching him play for Kilmarnock in the top flight last season.

It was really noticeable how much his workrate had increased from his previous spell in Scotland. He contributed so much to the team. That has not changed this term.

Okay, he hasn't scored in the league and hasn't hit the target in his last five matches. But he has often been isolated. He is winning the ball and looking around for somebody to supply with a pass or a flick-on.

But there is nobody there. Nobody is alongside him.

So it is not as if he is standing there doing nothing in games. He is making himself available, winning the ball and carving out openings for his team-mates.

Boyd's game has evolved over the years. He is doing exactly what a big target man should be doing.

As long as Rangers are winning games then I think Ally can handle Kris not scoring goals.

He knows as well as anyone that strikers go through spells where they struggle to hit the target. But, of course, Kris is in the side to hit the target

LET'S be honest, the pressure on the big man to net is greater than on anybody else in the Rangers side.

He knows himself he can score goals. He has not become a bad player overnight. He just needs to get one. Once he does so, he will grow in confidence.

He just needs to get a bit of luck in the final third. When he gets some he will be off and running.

At the moment, I think he is snatching at chances a bit. He is usually pretty cool under pressure. But he has gone so long without scoring it is affecting his composure. I can sympathise with him. It can be frustrating when things aren't falling for you in front of goal.

Having said that, in the last couple of games against Alloa and Falkirk he hasn't actually had many clear-cut opportunities to score.

I thought Alloa played exceptionally well and defended superbly at the Indodrill Stadium at the weekend. They limited the number of chances Rangers had.

It is funny that Kris is under scrutiny for being unable to score while he is being praised for how much he is contributing to the team in other areas.

It is a complete role reversal from his first spell at Rangers. Before, he was criticised for not doing enough even though he was a prolific scorer.

But he just needs to bundle a tap-in over the line from a couple of yards out and he will not look back.

David Templeton scored a very scrappy effort against Alloa to earn his side a draw. That is exactly the sort of goal Boyd needs just now.

Rangers will create chances for him. If the ball falls to him six or seven times in the box in the course of a game he just has to take one or two of them.

That is what Ally McCoist did in his career and it is what Kris Boyd has done successfully previously in his. I am sure he will do so again this season.
