Let's get the party started

I AM really looking forward to taking part in Rangers' 140th anniversary celebrations before and during the game against Stirling Albion at Ibrox tomorrow.

It is incredible to think the club the McNeil brothers formed in a Glasgow pub 140 years ago is still going strong.

There will be players past and present back at the club this weekend. We will have guys who played in the 1940s and 1950s in attendance.

I played for Rangers for 14 or 15 years and consider it an honour to have been a small part of such a massive club's history.

It will be good for the Rangers fans to have something to cheer about, to be able to rejoice in the legacy of their club after all that has gone on in the last 10 months or so.

Without tens of thousands of them turning up every week to watch the club in the Irn-Bru Third Division it would have ceased to exist.

I grew up as a Dundee United supporter. My heroes when I was a boy going to Tannadice were the striker Finn Dossing and the centre-half Doug Smith.

So I was very saddened to hear of the death of Doug earlier this week. To play 600-odd games in his position and not get booked once, tells you what a special talent he was.

He was one of the main reasons I wanted to play at the back when I started out on my own career. I played with his brother Dave at Rangers. My thoughts are with his family at this time.
