Monitor view for fourth official

THE Leigh Griffiths free-kick that crossed the line in the Edinburgh derby was the worst example I have ever seen of a goal not being given by a referee.

Leigh Griffiths takes the controversial free-kick which hit the bar and then bounced well over the line, but the goal wasn't given

The Hibs striker's stunning shot was a good yard over the line. But referee Euan Norris and his assistants somehow failed to spot that.

Our match officials are sponsored by SpecSavers. Isn't it about time they started using their products?

Seriously, though, the incident underlined why it is imperative that goalline technology is introduced in the SPL.

Our governing bodies have claimed that it is too expensive.

But the fourth official has a monitor beside him in the technical area. It would be simplicity itself for him to look at a replay to see if a ball had crossed the line.

In the game at Easter Road on Sunday it took 19 seconds from the time the ball went in until the incident could be viewed again on a replay.

It would not require the game to be stopped for five minutes. Whether it was a goal or not would be known right away.

What exactly does the fourth official do anyway? He should be able to look at these things and inform the match official what happened.

Pat Fenlon's team was wrongly deprived of two points at the weekend. Griffiths scored a perfectly good goal. They won the game fairly and squarely.

If they end up missing out on Europe by a couple of points it will be an injustice.
