MIKE Ashley is wanting to promote kids to the Rangers first team - so there could be no better man to appoint as manager than Ian Cathro to do that.

The Valencia assistant manager is highly regarded for his work with youngsters after his time with Dundee United.

The 28-year-old was responsible for bringing through the fine crop of youth players on Tayside - including Ryan Gauld who is now at Sporting Lisbon.

But Rangers have come out and denied speculation that they had made an official approach for the Scot. Even if they had wanted him, though, could they have got a coach of his high standing? He is sitting over there in Spain in a fantastic job. Valencia are a decent La Liga side. They beat Real Madrid this week. Is he going to be interested in joining Rangers given the well-publicised difficulties the club is going through? I doubt it. That is a problem that the League One champions are going to have if they are looking to bring somebody in to take the club forward. If their off-field problems continue then are they really going to be able to attract somebody of Cathro's calibre, somebody with a good reputation in Europe? I do think Rangers have to decide whether Kenny McDowall or somebody else is going to get the manager's job now. Somebody has to decide which players are going to be kept on and which players and going to be released.

What is the point in Kenny making that decision if all of a sudden somebody else is brought in?

If a new man is brought in he might have wanted to keep different players and let others go.
