Old Firm Colt idea doesn't add up

I WAS surprised when I saw that SFL chief executive David Longmuir had floated the idea of Rangers and Celtic Colt teams joining a new league set-up this week.

This plan was proposed months ago – and knocked back right away.

On one level, I don't see anything wrong with Celtic and Rangers putting youth teams in senior football.

They would get big crowds and money would be generated in the lower leagues as a result.

But I would feel sorry for the clubs who have strived for years to break into the upper echelons of our game.

The move would require a change to a 12-12-10-10 league structure.

But that would mean two more clubs being admitted. But have we not been saying for years there are too many clubs as things stand?

I am not sure that playing in a new Fourth Division would benefit the best young players at the Old Firm clubs particularly.

Anyway, this move would require Celtic and Rangers to join new leagues in England or elsewhere and that is never going to happen.
