RANGERS did what they needed to do against Dumbarton last week - win the game.

They were on a real downer after being spanked 4-0 by Hibs at Easter Road the week before.

So getting back to winning ways in the SPFL Championship was all important and they managed to pick up another three points.

But it was, despite the 3-1 scoreline, a far from comfortable win.

At 2-1, the visitors had a chance they should have taken. It was a hard-fought triumph.

Kenny Miller said that confidence is low in the Gers team at the moment and he is dead right.

Their heads are definitely down. There is nothing that Kenny McDowall can say to them in training to turn that around.

Kenny changed the team around a little against the Sons and that seemed to work. Kyle Hutton came in for Ian Black in central midfield and did a pretty solid job despite it being his first start of the 2014/15 season.

But as long as they are lacking in self-belief then they will struggle.

Rangers take on Alloa, who they haven't beaten in three meetings this season, at the Indodrill Stadium on Saturday and it will be a hell of a game.

It is a game for players, as Jock Wallace used to say when he was Rangers manager, with fires in their bellies.

Rangers might not have much of a chance of winning the title.

But they still want to finish second in the second tier - not third or fourth - and have to fight for that spot.
