IT wasn't a massive surprise when news broke that Kenny McDowall had tendered his resignation as Rangers caretaker manager.

Kenny is bright enough to know that he wasn't going to get the job on a permanent basis. He knew he was only in there until they found somebody else.

So he has done what Ally McCoist did and has handed in his notice. He will remain at the club for another year and and continue to do his best. But he is leaving.

He has put the pressure on the Rangers board. Do they keep him on? Or do they put him on gardening leave like Ally and bring somebody else in?

I actually don't think the directors are allowed to make big decisions - like appointing a new manager or using the stadium as security in return for a £10million loan - after an EGM has been called.

But if Kenny does join Ally on gardening leave, they will have to pay both of them, and then fork out for a replacement and the backroom team he will we want to bring in.

This is a club that is, by all accounts, struggling to pay wages. So I think he will be there for a while.

They don't have the money to pay two staff members to play golf every day.

I was never in the sort of situation the Rangers players are in just now during my career, so I don't know if all of this uncertainty and upheaval will affect them on the park.

I have always been of the opinion that as long as you are getting your wages paid you should go out on to the park and do your stuff.

But now, with everything that has gone on, with not only the manager but also his assistant gone, you do wonder if it is getting to them.

Having said that, they shouldn't be using it as an excuse. It is too easy to blame events elsewhere.

They should be going out there and working hard and winning games regardless.
