I HOPE Rangers boss Stuart McCall fields the same back four against Queen of the South as he did against Hearts.

Unless, that is, he opts to play three centre backs with two full backs pushing on when his side is attacking and dropping back when his team is defending.

I thought Richard Foster did well at Tynecastle considering he had been out for several months. For 70 minutes, in fact, he was different class.

Rangers looked comfortable at 2-0. Cammy Bell hardly had a save to make in the second half.

Then, all of a sudden, Genero Zeefuik comes on and the defence starts to struggle. They couldn't handle the big striker. It was a disappointing end.

But I thought the Rangers defence played really well. The majority of the fans would have been pleased with what they witnessed.

In the end, losing two goals and drawing 2-2 didn't matter. McCall's men could have won and not finished second in the league table.

But I thought the performance gave them some momentum going into the first leg of the play-off quarter-final at Palmerston Park. It was encouraging.

I said it in these pages last week, the best Rangers centre backs are Darren McGregor and Marius Zaliukas without a shadow of a doubt.

The way Foster played I would stick him in there at right back again. Lee Wallace is obviously a shoe-in at left back.

If Stuart does go for a four man back line instead of the three centre backs, he will go for a 4-4-1-1 formation or a 4-5-1 midfield.

He will pack the midfield and stop them. They are a good team in that area of the pitch. They pass the ball and go through teams.

If Queens revert to playing long balls then Rangers will be able to handle it. They don't have any big strikers.

No, Rangers should pack the midfield - like they did against Hibs at Easter Road last time out - and stop their hosts playing.

That will give them the chance to hit them on the counter attack - if they play their faster forwards up front.
