ALLY McCoist will pick Kris Boyd and Kenny Miller to play up front for Rangers when all four of his strikers are fit and available for selection.

But Boyd and Miller know they have to produce the goods because there are two good players waiting to take their places if they don't.

And that competition for places and depth in attack could give the Gers an edge over Hearts in the Championship race.

I know Nicky Clark and Jon Daly were disappointed to be left out against Raith Rovers at Ibrox on Saturday. They have done well whenever they have been given the nod. Plus, Boyd had been struggling and had failed to get his name on the scoresheet in the league.

The 31-year-old was contributing to games and creating chances for his team-mates but just not finding the target.

But Boyd justified his selection as did Miller. They both scored in an emphatic 6-1 victory that kept them in touch with the league leaders.

As I say, McCoist will stand by his tried and tested frontman in most games this season.

But having Clark and Daly - who got a run out against East Fife on Tuesday night - itching to get on and show what they are capable of is a good thing.

I'm not sure Hearts have that luxury. Sure, Robbie Neilson's side have played well in the league this season. They are the form side. But they will pick up injuries and suspensions.

Some players and former players are saying they can go through the entire season unbeaten. With three games against both Hibs and Rangers to come it is quite a claim.

But I think they will toil if they lose their key players as the season wears on. Rangers, on the other hand, should be able to handle that.
