Now check out today's Rangers greats...

40 SANDY ARCHIBALD

The Rangers Years: 1916/17-1933/34.

Appearances: 730.

Career highlight: Two goals in the 4-0 rout of Celtic in the 1928 Scottish Cup final.

Show us your medals: Four Scottish League titles; 10 Scottish Division One titles; three Scottish Cups.

So what makes you a legend? Archibald enjoyed the kind of longevity and success most players only dream of.

He won an incredible 13 league titles over a 17-year spell at Ibrox, the first in his debut season at the club following his move from Raith Rovers.

He rose to the occasion in Old Firm clashes, with legendary Celtic boss Willie Maley saying: "So long as he is on the pitch we can never be sure of victory."

Despite Rangers dominating the Scottish League during the 20s, cup glory continued to evade one of the greatest Light Blue sides. Archibald was to play a key part in ending their barren spell, scoring twice against their Glasgow rivals in the final of 1928.

That 4-0 win ended Rangers' 25-year wait for Scottish Cup success and added another medal to Archibald's collection. The outside right, who also won eight Scottish caps, died in 1946 aged just 49.

39 BERT MANDERSON

The Rangers Years: 1914/15-1926/27.

Appearances: 452.

Career highlight: Winning Division One, Glasgow Cup and Merchants Charity Cup hat-trick in season 1924/25.

Show us your medals: Three Scottish League titles; four Scottish Division One titles.

So what makes you a legend? Manderson cost Rangers boss William Wilton just £150 when he made the move to Ibrox from Glenavon, having previously turned out for Cliftonville and Belfast Celtic. While fellow-Northern Irishman Jim Clark returned across the water at the end of the pair's initial one-month loan, Manderson remained in Glasgow and became one of the Gers' most accomplished right-backs.

Known to the fans as 'Daddy Long Legs', the defender would play a huge part in Rangers' dominance of the Scottish top flight in the 1920s but, like many of his peers, he missed out on Scottish Cup glory during a barren spell for the Light Blues in that competition.

Manderson's impressive showings also won him international recognition before he left Ibrox for Bradford in 1927.

38 DAVE SMITH

The Rangers Years: 1966/67-1973/74.

Appearances: 338.

Career highlight: Lifting the 1972 Cup-Winners' Cup in Barcelona.

Show us your medals: European Cup-Winners' Cup.

So what makes you a legend? Smith played his part in Rangers' finest hour, but the feelings of joy and moments of elation were all too rare for a player of his quality. Primarily a left-sided midfielder, the man who moved to Ibrox from Aberdeen for £50,000 in 1966, undoubtedly one of Scot Symon's best-ever deals, would star at sweeper in the Nou Camp as the Gers defeated Moscow Dynamo to win their only European trophy to date.

Despite making more than 300 appearances for the Light Blues, it would be the only medal Smith would win during his eight-year Ibrox career.

He was starved of recognition on the international stage as well, making just two appearances for Scotland, perhaps a testament to the strength in depth the national squad enjoyed at that particular time.

After leaving Rangers, he took up a player/coach role at Arbroath before leading Berwick Rangers to the Second Division championship in 1979.

37 TERRY BUTCHER

The Rangers Years: 1986/87 - 1990/91

Appearances: 176

career highlight:Goal in the 2-1 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie in 1987 as Rangers clinched the title.

Show us your medals: four Premier Division titles, two League Cups

So what makes you a legend? The capture of Butcher from Ipswich changed the Scottish football landscape forever as the Souness revolution started in style. Never again will the Gers beat off competition from the Premiership's top teams to sign the England captain and the signing of Butcher set the tone for a momentous time in the Gers' history. The Light Blue legions immediately took Butcher to their hearts, his no-nonsense style, leadership and undoubted quality ensuring his place in Ibrox folklore.

His time at Rangers may have ended in acrimony after a bust-up with Souness but he will forever be revered and remembered for his successes.

Just months after winning the league at Pittodrie, Butcher suffered a broken leg in November 1987, his absence allowing Celtic to regain the title. The defender would lead by example once again, though, taking the Gers back to the top before his exit for Coventry in a £400,000 deal.

36 SAMMY COX

The Rangers Years: 1945/46-1954/55.

Appearances: 370.

Career highlight: Winning the treble in 1948/49.

Show us your medals: Four Scottish Division A titles; three Scottish Cups; one League Cup

So what makes you a legend: A member of the formidable Iron Curtain defence, Cox's place amongst Rangers' greatest servants is well-deserved. A naturally left-sided player, the Ayrshireman was comfortable in several positions as he starred for club and country in a hugely distinguished career. His debut came in a 4-2 win over Motherwell in August, 1946, but it wasn't until season 1947/48 that he was established in a legendary side.

A move to left-half to accommodate George Young completed the Iron Curtain and laid the foundations for the first treble, Cox missing just one game as the Gers pipped Dundee to the title by a point.

He made his final appearance in the 1955 Scottish Cup defeat to Aberdeen before he joined East Fife. Cox emigrated to Canada in 1959 and is an honorary member of the North American Rangers Supporters' Assocation.
