Russell: Old Firm games a big miss

DERBY striker Johnny Russell reckons Scottish football has missed its "incredible" Old Firm games - but is sure they will be restored next year.

The ex-Dundee United star says he enjoyed his clashes with Rangers, who he will face again today in a friendly match at the iPro Stadium.

This will be the last warm-up game for Ally McCoist's side ahead of their cup clash with Hibernian on Tuesday.

And Russell - one of a host of Scots stars in the Rams squad - can't wait to square up with the Light Blues once again.

He said: "When I was with United we always looked forward to games against Rangers.

"To have the chance to play against them again in England is exciting.

"Playing at Ibrox and Celtic Park was always an amazing experience. The atmosphere was superb.

"The Scottish game has missed those two sides playing each other over the last couple of years because Old Firm games are incredible.

"The Premiership needs Rangers back in there and hopefully that is only a year away from happening."

Russell has become a key part of Steve McLaren's squad since his move south and can't wait for the Light Blues clash.

He said: "I'm sure it will be a lively game as we have a few Scots in our squad here at Derby. It will be a good pre-season work-out for us.

"I played a few times against Rangers up in Scotland and scored a few against them, so I hope it continues on Saturday.

"My girlfriend's family are all coming down from Scotland for the game, as are quite a few of my friends, and they are all Rangers fans.

"So I hope Derby get the win because I don't want them giving me stick all weekend."
