STUART McCall was today told he is in a "very strong" position to land the Rangers manager's job full-time after leading the Ibrox club into the SPFL Premiership play-offs.

Highly-rated MK Dons boss Karl Robinson and former Brentford boss Mark Warburton and his assistant Davie Weir have been linked with the Gers hotseat.

Light Blues director Paul Murray stressed the board were examining all possibilities and hadn't made a final decision.

And Murray revealed the 54-time Scottish champions may appoint a Director of Football to work alongside their new boss.

But he admitted Nine-In-A-Row great McCall had impressed since taking over on an interim basis in March.

He said: "The team has definitely progressed. We are in a good position.

"I am very open with Stuart. He will definitely be a very strong candidate given his performance so far, but we need to look at other options.

"We will obviously have a list of things to look at and benchmark against that. One of them will be track record of developing players.

"Stuart has done that at Rangers and done that at Motherwell and that will be an important thing to look at."

Murray added: "We have to do a lot more player development. We have to identify players, bring them in, coach them properly, add some value to them then either put them in the first team or trade them on.

"In my time as chairman, I've spent a good bit of time looking at other clubs.

"I've been down to England to see quite a few and spoken to a lot of people I know in the game.

"Most clubs with aspirations to play in the Champions League have a director of football or technical director.

"We are looking at it. The relationship between the first team coach and the director of football is critical.

"You can't have one of them undermining the other, it has to be integrated. It could be part of our plan going forward."

Asked if former manager Dick Advocaat, who was at Murray Park earlier this month, was a contender, Murray said: "I've not spoken to Dick. He was here for other reasons."
