RANGERS interim boss Stuart McCall has told the Ibrox board he will need to have the final say on signing players - if they bring in a Director of Football.

The Nine-In-A-Row great is currently trying to get the Glasgow giants promoted and win the gaffer's position on a full-time basis.

The 50-year-old's side is leading 2-0 heading into the second leg of the SPFL Premiership play-off semi-final with Hibs at Easter Road today.

He was told earlier on this week he is in a "very strong" position - despite other managers being linked with the job.

Gers director Paul Murray revealed on Thursday the Glasgow giants were contemplating appointing someone to oversee football operations.

And McCall, who had breakfast with Dave King before the major shareholder was appointed chairman yesterday, has stressed he would want to identify signing targets.

He said: "I mentioned to Paul a few weeks ago that I had spoken to Craig Levein about the Hearts model.

"If you asked 99 per cent of managers if they could have the choice, they would want to bring their own players to the club.

"Now, you could go to a Sporting Director and say: 'These are the positions I need'. They could then come back with three right-backs or whatever. Almost like a head scout.

"Where it can fall down, and where it has fallen down a couple of times in England and certainly abroad, is when a manager turns up and there are three players there he doesn't know.

"It's not just about saying that someone is a great player. You need to know a bit of background, whether they will fit into the dressing room and the system and so on.

"Certainly, having a Director of Football is the way things are going in Europe and maybe at some of the bigger clubs.

"But as long as the manager, whoever it is, has a say on the players coming into the football club then it could work."

McCall successfully rebuilt his side twice during his four year spell at Motherwell and would like the opportunity to identify and bring in players if he gets kept on at Rangers.

He said: "I'd probably say my strengths at Motherwell were bringing players in to the club, improving them and then moving them on.

"We brought in Henrik Ojamaa on £300 a week and then sold him for £350,000.

"At Rangers, it's a little bit different because you can offer them that little bit extra to stay. But I think there's a great opportunity here for whoever gets the job whatever league Rangers are in."

"There is no doubt there will be fresh faces brought in along with good quality players here already. There are players out of contract, but that creates an opportunity."

McCall revealed he was pleased with how his conversation with King, who was passed as fit and proper by the SFA on Tuesday, had gone.

He said: "We just had a chat about football. I was pleased when I came out of it. I thought everything went well. He's a nice guy. He's obviously got plans.

"I'm quite content with the situation, 100 per cent. My mandate when I came in wasn't to get promotion. It was to improve certain things."
