David Templeton arrived at Rangers on the final day of last summer's transfer window with a great deal of expectation weighing on his young shoulders.

Just three days beforehand the winger had netted for Hearts in their Europa League play-off against Liverpool at Anfield.

Ibrox fans were crying out for a new hero after seeing player after player head out the exit door on an almost daily basis following the club's demotion to the bottom tier of Scottish football.

But Templeton's joy at signing for the Ibrox giants lasted only a short time as he was struck down by injury shortly after arriving.

However, his performances when he returned to the team, coupled with some spectacular goals, showed fans just what he is capable of.

Now, the 24-year-old winger, who has just recovered from another troublesome pre- season injury, is determined to play a starring role this term this season and is targeting more silverware. The Ibrox side kicked off their season with a convincing win over Albion Rovers at the weekend - and Templeton believes that the signings made this summer by boss Ally McCoist have given the Ibrox side the required depth they need.

"We want to win everything, it's as simple as that," he said the winger.

"There is a real belief within the squad this summer. We have brought in some quality signings and although that means there is a bit of competition for places now, it means there are a lot of options available to the manager.

"If we are going to do well in the cups then we would need to be able to play well against any of the top-flight teams - no matter who that is. I don't see why we should fear anyone.

We're ready to go and fight for everything this season. There is a good feeling within the team and our aim is to be as successful as we possibly can be."

Templeton didn't quite get the full benefit of pre-season because injury meant he remained at Murray Park working on his rehabilitation while the rest of the squad headed to Germany.

But he has told the Rangers fans that there is more to come from him this season after he managed to net 15 goals last time out.

"I always feel that I should be hitting double figures and that is always a personal ambition of mine at the beginning of a season," he said.

"But I want to get through the season without having any injury problems.

"I want to make sure that I get myself into the team and that I stay there.

"It could be one of those seasons where, if you lose your place, you might not get back in because there are players here now who can come in and take your place.

"I really enjoyed my first season with the club but I want to kick on. If I can get a good start and keep myself fit then I think the Rangers fans will see the best of me.

"I enjoyed the goal against Albion Rovers at the weekend but the run out was even more important. I don't feel as though I am too far off the rest of the boys in terms of fitness but I definitely need games."

Rangers are at Forfar today as they kick-off their League Cup campaign, and Templeton is optimistic that he will play some role in that.

McCoist has his hands tied since he is forbidden from fielding any trialists in the game, but Templeton is keen to maintain a bit of momentum before the SPFL League One season begins.

"It can be so important just to clock up some good results early doors but it gives you that confidence," he said.

"The other thing is we really do feel we want to make good progress in the cups and this is the first step to doing that.

"We obviously can't play the likes of Nicky Law and Jon Daly, but I thought Lewis Macleod was outstanding for us last weekend and it is like having a new signing having him back in the team.

"I really enjoying playing with him. He's the kind of player that never panics on the ball, he always seems to be able to find time and make the right pass.

"It will be a tight pitch and Forfar will make it hard for us but it is up to us to go and be professional and get the result we're looking for."
