Sports Direct tycoon Mike Ashley's involvement in Rangers and Newcastle United will prevent both clubs from playing in Europe at the same time.

Several reports say Uefa have confirmed Ashley's involvement in the running of the clubs will stop them from playing in Europe next season even if they qualify for different competitions.

It is understood Ashley misjudged Uefa's strict rules which ensure the integrity of the competition.

The rules would mean should one team qualify for the Champions League, the other would be prevented from playing in the Europa League as they could meet in the knockout phase of the competition.

A Uefa spokesman would not comment on the story. The spokesman referred the Evening Times to article three of their regulations on integrity of the competition that relates to individuals/clubs with an interest in another club.
